Global 100% Renewable Energy Supply Is Not A Joke

At present, as the global climate continues to rise, since the formal adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015, the international community and commercial organizations have expressed their willingness to transform to 100% renewable energy. However, the public does not seem to care about this. After all, in the context of the resurgence of the "coal" forces, the economics of coal power and the market competitiveness remain, 100% renewable energy replacement is not easy to realize.

In this regard, at the 13th SNEC Conference held in Shanghai on June 3, Li Junfeng, the first director of the National  Center for Climate Change Strategy Research and International Cooperation, gave us a reassurance.


Li Junfeng said: "We have already proposed the goal of achieving 100% renewable energy contribution globally. You may think that it is somewhat out of reach. But in fact, when the EU first proposed the contribution of 50% renewable energy in 2050 in 1997, everyone also Doubtful, but no one is questioning today. Now we are faced with various uncertainties, but the replacement of fossil energy by renewable energy is the general trend."


Li Junfeng also pointed out that in addition to the utilization of coal, there are still two uncertainties, mainly the changes inChinaand theUnited Statesand climate change. In the field involving these two issues, photovoltaics are promising!


1. Trade friction is intensifying, photovoltaic industry is not afraid


Since last year, Sino-US trade friction has intensified. On May 13 this year, theUnited  Statesannounced that it would impose tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese exports to theUnited States, and the tariff rate will increase to 25%. On May 14,Chinamade a counterattack and decided to impose tariffs on some imported goods originating in theUnited   States, including solar panels, inverters and transformers etc PV products.


The gradual “whitening” of Sino-US trade friction has affected the whole world, but for the future development of photovoltaics, Li Junfeng emphasized: “The most critical issue is that we must be ourselves.”


After more than 20 years of development, China PV has successfully evolved from a niche industry that relies on foreign markets and markets to a “Chinabusiness card” that representsChina's strength, leading the world in terms of technology and shipments. At this time,China's photovoltaic industry stabilized itself and stabilized the grand goal of renewable energy transformation.


Fortunately, it is not difficult for the photovoltaic industry to stabilize its mission. It is understood that the impact of this trade friction on the photovoltaic industry is limited. Many industry insiders have said that although theUnited  Stateswas once the second largest exporter of Chinese PV products, theUSmarket has been declining inChina's PV industry as theUnited   Statescontinues to investigate and increase tariffs on Chinese PV products. From the statistics of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, it can be seen that since 2018, the direct export of Chinese PV products to theUnited   Statesis almost zero.


At present, the development ofChina's photovoltaic overseas market is still in a rhythm. Gao Jifan, chairman of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, also said at the meeting that due to the rapid decline in photovoltaic costs, the overseas market grew in 2019, the EU market recovered rapidly, and the demand in the US market rebounded sharply on the basis of last year. Southeast Asia, Latin America, The development momentum of countries and regions such as the Middle East is very rapid. The trend of diversification of the photovoltaic market is becoming more pronounced and prominent.


What is more noteworthy is that John, the general counsel of the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) and vice president of market strategy, is optimistic about Sino-US solar trade relations. He believes: "Although we have a long trade winter, we are still very Optimism, eventually spring will come. After all, in the PV industry, we need to really join hands to achieve more development, mutual support, mutual respect, and a win-win cooperation can truly promote the harmonious development of the photovoltaic industry inChinaand theUnited States."


2. In response to climate change, photovoltaics are promising


'For our PV industry, this means a very big opportunity' David said. Today, the global PV installed capacity has reached 0.5TW, but PV contributes only 2.6% to global power generation, so there is still huge potential for PV in the future.


After more than 20 years of development, photovoltaic power generation has become the world's largest energy source for new power installations. The cost of solar power generation equipment has also dropped to one-twentieth. Now, in Europe, Latin America, the Middle  East and other countries, photovoltaic power generation the cost is already lower than that of thermal power. In the past few weeks,China's PV parity project has also been officially announced. 2019 will become a milestone in the history of PV development. From then on, global PV will quickly enter a new era of comprehensive parity.


For the future of photovoltaics, Gao Jifan is full of confidence. ‘Looking forward to the future, according to the forecast of international renewable energy reserves, the proportion of photovoltaic power generation in global energy will increase from 3% to more than 30% in 2025. At the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution, the green low-carbon energy technology based on photovoltaics will become one of the ten pillar technologies of the industrial revolution. The era of solar photovoltaic power generation has arrived. In the future, we will build a new energy system and form an intelligent low-carbon, even carbon-free new energy system, which is an inevitable trend and an achievable goal'.
